Hayes Avenue Underpass Rehabilitation — City of Sandusky

The Hayes Avenue Pump Station is used to drain the two-lane roadway under the Norfolk Southern Railroad tracks located in the central portion of Sandusky. During peak storm events, the Hayes Avenue underpass flooded due to a lack of existing pump capacity and excessive runoff flows from adjacent areas. In addition, an existing force main outlet was exposed along the wall under the bridge, which obstructed the sidewalk and was subject to damage and repairs.

KS Associates was selected to provide engineering services for the project (ERI-4-11.03), due to our experience in the study, design, detailed plans, and construction of pump station replacement projects. Services included force main relocation and pump capacity study, preliminary drawings, cost estimates, and recommendations for the pump station rehabilitation.

The rehabilitation of the Hayes Avenue Pump Station reduced flooding, which was causing safety concerns, traffic detours and damage to the existing pavement, retaining walls, and sidewalks under the bridge.

Shown here is the underpass before rehabilitation.
