Middle Avenue Sanitary Sewer — City of Elyria

Middle Avenue Sanitary Sewer

The City of Elyria selected KS Associates to design a new trunk sanitary sewer that would provide service to an area that had been recently annexed, south of the city limits. The sewer was routed on Middle Avenue, from Fuller Road to the south corporation line. KS Associates prepared plans, specifications and an opinion of probable construction costs for the project, which included 3,127 lineal feet (L.F.) of 24-inch PVC sanitary sewer with manholes and appurtenances. The sewer averaged 25 feet in depth. The northern portion of the sewer replaced an existing, 8-inch sanitary sewer, thus it was critical to maintain service for the residents whose service connections needed to be tied into the new sewer.

The City performed the bidding services. The low bidder came in at $641,587, which was 23% below the Engineer’s Estimate.

The City requested that KS provide construction observation services for the construction phase of the project. Construction started in November 2008 and was completed during the second quarter of 2009. Throughout construction, KS provided critical and timely information to the City, including daily inspection reports. We maintained a running account of quantities installed and reviewed Contractor’s pay estimates. We provided a punch list of deficiencies as the project reached a conclusion. Post-construction, KS also prepared “as-built” plans for the City.

In February 2009, the City authorized KS to design a 700-foot extension to the Middle Avenue Trunk Sewer. Construction for this extension is complete.
