EMH Regional Medical Center, Courtyard Infill Shell Package, Elyria, Ohio

This project involved adding a basement and two floors of office space to an existing 6,000-square-foot pad in the courtyard area of the medical facility. KS was selected by the architect to provide civil engineering services.

KS’s role was to evaluate existing utility connection points and design a solution to service the addition through those connections — both before construction and as construction progressed. KS also designed a footer drain system that would avoid storm water from flowing into an interior sub-pump in the new basement. Diverting water from this area was imperative, as mission-critical computer systems would be housed in the basement. KS designed a conveyance and pump system to direct outside footer drain to the exterior gravity storm sewer.

Other components of the project included tying the existing grading at the street to the addition's entrance.

KS also addressed the relocation of an entrance drive, accommodating the turning radii of trucks and the required maintenance access.

The final site layout included a solution for the physical building expansion, the addition of a Patient Drop-Off Area, an access drive to the maintenance area, handicapped-accessible parking, and an underground stormwater management system.
