KS Associates Congratulates ACEC Award Winners

March 21, 2005 – Each year, the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) recognizes Ohio engineering firms that have demonstrated a high degree of achievement, value and ingenuity. The annual ACEC Engineering Excellence Awards is an opportunity for engineers to showcase their talent and demonstrate how the profession improves the quality of life for the communities in which we live and work.

This year, ACEC chose 37 projects to serve as prime examples of the results engineers can produce when responding to a problem or challenge. Of those 37 examples, KS Associates provided civil engineering and/or surveying services for four of the projects.

We would like to congratulate all of this year's winners for their hard work, creativity and determination at getting tough jobs done, and extend a special thanks to the following firms for the opportunity to work on these award-winning projects:

CDM - Abram Creek Improvement Projects
CDM - Cuyahoga River Stream Restoration Project
Baker and Associates - Cleveland Hopkins International Airport New Runway
DLZ Ohio, Inc. - Bagley Road Grade Separation

CDM - Abram Creek Improvement Projects, Outstanding Achievement Award — To complete runway projects at the Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, The Cleveland Department of Port Control needed to enclose and convey nearly one mile of Abram Creek, an entrenched urban stream. As prime contractor, CDM called on KS Associates to provide surveying and base mapping services, and to design and provide construction plans for the Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP), one of the most extensive SWPPPs undertaken in Northeast Ohio. The plan minimized sediment runoff from entering the creek — a challenge considering the size of the creek. The Ohio EPA also recognized the SWPPP as a "model" plan and forwarded it to the Construction Industry Compliance Assistance (CICA) for use on their Web site. The CICA is the construction industry's source for plain-language explanations of environmental rules and includes Best Management Practices and other educational information.

CDM - Cuyahoga River Stream Restoration Project, Outstanding Achievement Award — Built in 1836, the Kent Dam is an integral part of the Kent Industrial District and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. CDM was consulted to develop alternative methods of addressing water quality problems in the pool behind the dam. CDM selected KS Associates to provide topographic base mapping. One of the most interesting aspects of this project was that our surveyors obtained river-bottom elevations by wading in the water, and by boat in deeper areas. Our surveyors made over 4,200 measurements to produce a topographic base map with one-foot contours, which was used in the design of the dam modifications and river improvements.

Baker and Associates - Cleveland Hopkins International Airport New Runway, Honor Award — Baker and Associates was selected as the engineering firm or consultant prime contractor for the design and construction of a major
new runway at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. To ensure the project did not disrupt the flying public, the firm developed a phased construction plan that involved careful planning and coordinating with air traffic control personnel and the many parties involved in the project — including KS Associates. Baker and Associates consulted with KS Associates to design the Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) and specification for erosion and sediment control. We also provided surveying and topographic mapping services and did so without disrupting flight operations. Our surveyors demonstrated their ability to work under adverse weather conditions by gathering pavement locations on existing runways at night, during the winter.

DLZ of Ohio, Inc. - Bagley Road Grade Separation, Honor Award — When a train passed through Berea, the town was effectively split in half as traffic on Bagley Road came to a standstill. DLZ's job was to design a road grade separation that included a 1,500-foot roadway underpass with four through lanes, a landscaped median and sidewalls. As a subcontractor for the City of Berea, KS Associates provided survey consulting services.
