November 1, 2007 – Heather Parker, a junior at The University of Akron (UA), is this year’s recipient of The KS Associates Scholarship for Women in Engineering. The $2,500 scholarship was established by KS Associates, a civil engineering and surveying firm. The scholarship was created in 2005 in partnership with UA’s Women in Engineering Program (WIEP). It was designed to support women’s pursuits of careers in this technical, traditionally male-dominated field. This is the second consecutive year in which Parker has been named the recipient.
The annual scholarship is available to female civil engineering students of sophomore status and above who demonstrate academic excellence and who have a minimum grade-point-average (GPA) of 2.75.
Lynn S. Miggins, P.E., President of KS Associates, is a member of the UA WEIP Advisory Council. According to Miggins, “Heather was selected based on her GPA of 3.99 and the quality of her essay.” In her essay Parker wrote, “I chose civil engineering to satisfy my love for mathematics, to carry on my family’s legacy, and to aesthetically and efficiently improve the environment around me.” Parker is following in her family’s footsteps — before retiring, Parker’s grandfather owned a roadway construction firm, for which her mother served as president.
