East College Street Project Receives CES Award of Excellence

March 18, 2011 – The East College Street Project in downtown Oberlin, Ohio, was recognized at the Cleveland Engineering Society's 59th Annual Design & Construction Conference on March 9, 2011. The project received an Award of Excellence in the New Construction, Small Project Category. KS Associates was a member of the project team and provided site design, LEED consulting and surveying services.
The East College Street Project is a reclaimed brownfield that now houses a mixed-use development. The project includes condominium units, retail space, office space, underground parking and courtyard with community gardens. The project has been certified by the U.S. Green Building Council as a LEED Neighborhood Development at the Gold level.
KS civil engineers assisted the developer in overcoming site constraints including an 11-foot elevation change and a confined project area. Design solutions addressed ADA accessibility requirements, utility coordination, emergency vehicle access, efficient stormwater management and the preservation of natural features including an signature tree centered in the new courtyard. KS also participated in the review and coordination of LEED credits.
The project was completed in the Fall of 2010 and was developed by first-time developers Sustainable Community Associates (SCA) - comprised of recent graduates of Oberlin College.
