KS Associates Attends Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for Lake Metroparks' New Painesville Township Park Pier

Painesville Township Park Pier

October 17, 2017 – On Tuesday, October 17, 2017, representatives from KS Associates attended a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the grand opening of the new Painesville Township Park Pier. The new 200-foot-long pier, designed by KS Associates, is now open to the public. The pier is part of a shoreline protection initiative undertaken by Lake Metroparks and the Painesville Township Board of Park Commissioners.

In 2013, Lake Metroparks contracted with KS Associates to develop concepts for the new pier. After presenting several alternatives, the chosen design is the 150-foot-long by 20-foot-wide steel crib pier connected to shore with a 50-foot-long by 10-foot-wide steel bridge. The crib pier is constructed with steel frames filled with stone and anchored to the lakebed with piles. The crib serves as a stone reef, providing a fish habitat that will attract larger Lake Erie game fish.

Construction of the pier was complete in September 2017, and the pier was officially opened with the ribbon cutting ceremony on October 17, 2017.

As part of the project, KS Associates also developed a solution to stabilize the eroding hillside along the park's shoreline. KS designed a new 800-foot-long armor stone revetment east and west of the pier to replace a failing steel sheet pile retaining wall. Construction of the revetment was completed in July 2015.

KS provided 100% design drawings, specifications, a cost estimate, and construction administration and inspection services for the improvements. KS also prepared U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Ohio Department of Natural Resources, and Ohio Environmental Protection Agency permit applications for the lakefront structures.
